Educators as Digital Immigrants: Re-Learning How to Learn December 19, 2006

As the newest member of a wonderful group of MidLink Magazine editors (read about MidLink in the former post), I’ve been asked to maintain a blog on “emerging technology” in the k-12 classroom. This is not an easy task as the list of free, almost free, and not-so-free applications that have outstanding potential as educational tools is growing as I write this blog. In many ways, an educator need only a “vision” regarding a new student project or new teaching technique or procedure and then they can boldly venture forth onto the Internet to find an application that will best suit their needs.

That said, I just did a presentation last evening at Cary Academy for the parent population regarding our new 1:1 tablet PC initiative. At Cary Academy we have just completed our first 12 weeks of this adventure and experiment. It has been quite a learning experience for all- administrators, technology staff, teachers, parents, and students alike. I report this as my new philosophy is that the most important thing that we can provide as educators is an environment were students “learn how to learn” in a digital world were information is growing exponentially and changing in “real time”. I write this because although a teacher with a vision can easily find an application to suit their needs in the classroom, perhaps the greatest obstacle is “re-learning how to learn” the technology as an adult who was not taught to learn in the information age. Teaching students who are “digital natives” as a teacher who is a “digital immigrant” can be a formidable task no matter how many wonderful applications exist as potential tools in the classroom.

So in this first blog entry I am going to sign off as a educator, digital immigrant, and adult learner who is re-learning how to learn. And I leave you with this Hebrew proverb…

‘Do not confine your children to your own learning for they were born in another time.’
